Mode is a heart-rate training app for iPhone and Apple Watch: build workouts, train live with zones and voice cues, get a morning GO / NO-GO readiness verdict, and let the coach plan your week.
Need help? Email us: [email protected] — we read everything and usually reply within 1–2 business days.
When you write, it helps enormously to include your iPhone model, your iOS version, the Mode version (Settings → About), and — for anything data-related — a screenshot of Settings → Diagnostics, which is built to answer most support questions in one image.
Frequently asked questions
My heart rate isn’t showing in a session
Mode reads live HR from a Bluetooth chest strap or arm band paired directly in the app (Settings → Connections), or from your Apple Watch when you start the session with the watch app. If a strap won’t connect: make sure it’s worn and moistened (straps only broadcast when they sense a body), close any other app currently holding the strap (Zwift, the manufacturer’s app), then try again from Settings → Connections. A strap can only talk to one app at a time.
The morning verdict says “not enough data”
That’s the honest answer, not a bug: Mode refuses to score a night it has no data for. It needs last night’s sleep, HRV or resting HR — from your Apple Watch via Apple Health, or from WHOOP or Oura if connected. If you wore a device and still see this, open Settings → Diagnostics and check the sleep and HRV rows; they name exactly which value is missing and where the chain stopped.
WHOOP or Oura stopped syncing
Go to Settings → Connections. If the row says the connection dropped, tap it and sign in again — WHOOP in particular uses single-use tokens, and one bad network moment can end the chain until you reconnect. Your history in Mode is unaffected.
iCloud backup — what syncs and what doesn’t
The “Back up to iCloud” toggle (Settings → Connections) syncs the content you create in Mode — workouts, programmes, session history, gear, races, week templates — to your own private iCloud. Health data (heart rate, sleep, HRV) is never uploaded: it stays in Apple Health on your device, and Mode reads it fresh on each phone. Sync needs iCloud Drive enabled for Mode in iPhone Settings → your name → iCloud.
Notifications aren’t arriving
Mode only sends what you asked for: the morning check at your chosen time and optional pre-session reminders (Settings → Notifications). Check that notifications are allowed in iPhone Settings → Notifications → Mode, and that a Focus mode isn’t silencing them.
The lock-screen widget shows nothing
Add it from the lock screen editor (hold the lock screen → Customise). It fills after the next time you open Mode with a verdict on the dashboard. If it stays empty, Settings → Diagnostics → “Lock widget” says which side needs attention.
Subscriptions, lifetime unlock, restore
Mode Pro is available as a monthly or yearly subscription, or a one-time lifetime purchase. Subscriptions are billed and managed by Apple — cancel any time in iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions; access runs to the end of the paid period. Bought Pro before, or moved to a new phone? Tap Restore purchases on the paywall — purchases follow your Apple ID. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
How do I delete my data?
Everything Mode stores lives on your device (and in your private iCloud if backup is on). Deleting the app deletes the data; to clear the iCloud copy too, turn off “Back up to iCloud” first or remove Mode’s data in iPhone Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage. Mode has no accounts and no server-side copy of your data to ask us to delete — there is nothing we hold.
Privacy in one paragraph
Mode has no user accounts. Your training and health data stay on your device and in your own private iCloud (if you enable backup) — we run no database of users and cannot see your data. Health values from Apple Health, WHOOP or Oura are read to compute your readiness and are never sold, shared, or uploaded to our servers. The full privacy policy is at dataloup.io/mode/privacy. Questions about your data: [email protected].
Feedback and feature requests
Use Send Feedback inside the app (Settings), or email [email protected]. Mode is built by a small team that ships weekly — real athlete reports drive what gets built next.
